Obituary for Milton C. "Mick" Compton

Milton C. "Mick" Compton
Milton C. “Mick” Compton, 75, of 5 Hunter Park in Princeton died Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Born May 16, 1937 in Rhodell, WV he was the son of the late O.D. “Bus” Compton and Mary Elizabeth Malcolm Compton. Mick attended Princeton schools, graduated from Hargrave Military Academy in 1955, and Mercer School of Pharmacy in Atlanta in 1973. Mick, his brother Burl, and dear friend, Owen McKay operated drug stores in Narrows, VA, Peterstown, WV and Pembroke, VA. In 1978, his father, “Bus” retired from Compton Construction Company and Mick came back to this area to take over his Dad’s position. He was still running the seventy one year old company and was also a relief pharmacist for area drugstores. Mick loved his family-his sister and all of his brothers and their families. His pride and joy were his daughters and grandchildren and he was always attending sporting events, concerts, recitals or anything they were involved in. Mick was a member of the First Baptist Church in Princeton and had been a member of the Advisory Committee of the Salvation Army for over twenty years. He was also a member of the Princeton-Mercer County Chamber of Commerce and Princeton Elks Lodge #1459, served on the Property Commission of the WV Contractor’s Association, and was a former Lions Club member. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Vocational Schools of America National Honor Society. Mick loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking and two weeks ago hiked fifteen miles of the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina. He was an avid photographer, and especially liked taking pictures of waterfalls that he would see while hiking. He was an avid WVU Mountaineers fan. Survivors include his wife of fifty one years, Judi Simpkins Compton of Princeton; two daughters, Janice Compton Sowder and husband Randy, and Mary Kate Compton Tibbs and husband Steve all of Princeton; five grandchildren, Kristen Tibbs of Huntington, WV, Aaron Walkup, Katie Tibbs, Morgan Walkup, and Chance Sowder all of Princeton; one sister, Katie Compton Prinzbach and husband Don of Moneta, VA; three brothers, Dr. DeLone Compton and wife Dorthea of Charlotte, NC, Burl Compton and wife Joan of Roanoke, VA and L.M. “Skip” Compton and wife Gayle of Penhook, VA; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 22, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Serving as pallbearers will be Owen McKay, Ronnie Coleman, Ott Fredeking, Fred Farley, Ervon Combs, Jr., and Stuart Sigmon. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be present and former employees of Compton Construction Company.
