Herbert Carson Thornton, 82, of 482 Clemson Circle in Princeton died Monday, September 10, 2012 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born September 4, 1930 in Snowville, VA he was the son of the late Clifton Carson Thornton and Bessie May Thornton. Herbert was a United States Air Force retiree with twenty five years service serving one tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He had been a resident of Princeton since his retirement from the military in 1975 and was a member of the Princeton Church of God. In addition to his parents, one son, Donald C. “Donnie” Thornton preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Ester Lloyd Hooven Thornton of Princeton; one son, Gary Hooven of Smithfield, VA; one granddaughter, Haley Elizabeth Hooven of Smithfield, VA; and one brother, Don Thornton of Princeton. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 13, 2012 at the Princeton Church of God, Oakvale Road in Princeton with Sister Stella Falvo and Pastor Fred Farley officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Park Cemetery in Princeton with the United States Air Force Honor Guard and the Mercer County Veterans Council conducting military graveside rites.
